San Niccolò is considered Florence’s oldest neighborhood, with roots reaching back to the Etruscan era, long before the Romans founded Florentia. Sitting just across the Arno, it was once the city’s front line of defense, home to soldiers, artisans, and working families rather than nobles — a history that shaped its authentic, lived-in character.

The neighborhood is home to Porta San Miniato, the only medieval city gate in Florence you can still walk through today, and marks the beginning of the climb toward Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato al Monte, where vineyards, olive groves, and monasteries covered the hills.

San Niccolò also preserves Florence’s tradition of wine windows, where locals sold wine directly from their homes centuries ago. Long a haven for artists, craftsmen, and free spirits, it still feels like a village within the city — filled with bakeries, family-run trattorias, and a strong sense of community.

Named after Saint Nicholas, protector of sailors and travelers, San Niccolò remains a historic gateway to Florence’s most breathtaking views — and one of its most authentic neighborhoods.
