Even though the region of San Gimignano overlaps a small part of the Sienese Chianti, the most important characteristic grape is Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Sangiovese remains the second most grown grape in the area.

The white Vernaccia di San Gimignano is Tuscany's only DOCG white wine. Most of it is fresh and bottled in spring after harvest, but also a Riserva is made, oak-aged and fuller-bodied, worthy of aging.

The area also makes San Gimignano DOC, an appellation that allows for a little bit of everything, and, of course, Chianti.
