Private San Gimignano wine tour

San Gimignano's wine growing region surrounds the famous hilltop town, a must-see for the first time traveller to Tuscany. Whereas we will make a quick stop to let you explore the town, our day will be mainly in the countryside around the village where we can relax at the wineries, away from the crowds of the town. The drive out from Florence is around an hour and we will immediately dive into the organic vineyards at the first winery. We'll get to know the fantastic winery owners who will most probably personally take us around the property. We'll have time to stroll through the vineyards (weather permitting), see the cellars and learn first-hand about the winemaking in the region. Tasting of several kinds of Vernaccia wines will follow along with a snack to soak it all up. Lunch is possibly in a saffron farm, or otherwise in a local restaurant in the countryside. We'll enjoy the local specialties and have time to delve into conversation about local traditions and history. In the afternoon, we'll visit a second winery in the region, or if you're keen to go to a Chianti Classico red wine producer we'll head overthere on our way back towards Florence.

Even though the region of San Gimignano overlaps a small part of the Sienese Chianti, the most important characteristic grape is Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Sangiovese remains the second most grown grape in the area.

The white Vernaccia di San Gimignano is Tuscany's only DOCG white wine. Most of it is fresh and bottled in spring after harvest, but also a Riserva is made, oak-aged and fuller-bodied, worthy of aging.

The area also makes San Gimignano DOC, an appellation that allows for a little bit of everything, and, of course, Chianti.
