VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO FACTS
Wineries: Around 70
Total square hectares: Around 730
Total production: Around 5.5 MM bottles

A region inhabited first by the Etruscans. Some of the first written information about the Vernaccia is to be found in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy.
First DOC wine region of Italy in 1966.

Even though the region of San Gimignano overlaps a small part of the Sienese Chianti, the most important characteristic grape is Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Sangiovese remains the second most grown grape in the area.

The white Vernaccia di San Gimignano is Tuscany's only DOCG white wine. Most of it is fresh and bottled in spring after harvest, but also a Riserva is made, oak-aged and fuller-bodied, worthy of aging.
The area also makes San Gimignano DOC, an appellation that allows for a little bit of everything, and, of course, Chianti.
