OLIVE OIL IN TUSCANY

Tuscany is renowned for producing some of the finest extra virgin olive oil in Italy—and indeed, the world. However, the region sits at the northern edge of where olive trees can thrive, meaning the trees are smaller and yield fewer olives than their southern counterparts. As a result, production is limited. Most of the harvest is still done by hand, and by the time it's underway in the fall, cooler temperatures help preserve the olives' delicate flavors and nutrients. The result is an exceptionally high-quality oil—so rare and precious that it's often consumed locally and rarely found beyond the region.
