Itinerary of Brunello di Montalcino

Our day begins at our meeting point/office in Florence at 8:45 AM (we recommend arriving a little early to check in and use the bathroom facilities). We also suggest having breakfast before starting your journey to Montalcino in Southern Tuscany. In terms of what to bring, perhaps a bottle of water for the ride.

Your day will be led by our English-speaking expert Grape Guide. In a small group of no more than eight guests, you will board our luxury Mercedes van and head south of Florence toward Montalcino—a journey of about 1.5 to 2 hours (depending on traffic). The added benefit of joining our guided wine tour is that travel time is never wasted: your guide will use the drive to share insights about the region and the wines you’ll soon taste.

We will visit three wineries during the day and make a brief stop in Montalcino village for a leisurely stroll. Grape Tours works with a selection of family-owned wineries, and the exact order and names of the estates are usually shared on the day of the tour (you can view a list of our partner wineries here). Our carefully curated selection showcases a variety of locations and styles, allowing you to truly appreciate the terroir of Montalcino. We love working with small, family-run estates, where you’ll often meet the winemakers and owners themselves—making for a personal and authentic experience.

Lunch is always a highlight of the day. After exploring cellars and vineyards in the morning, we enjoy a delicious three-course lunch paired with the estate’s wines.

Each of the three wineries visited will share their unique take on Montalcino’s special passion for the Sangiovese grape, and what makes their Brunello (and other wines) so exceptional and age-worthy. At every stop, you’ll enjoy a seated tasting of around four wines, always including Brunello and, when possible, a Riserva or special Cru.

Weather and time permitting, we’ll also give you the chance to wander the charming cobblestone streets of Montalcino.
