Traces of Etruscans are also found in Montalcino, but the wine only reached it first recognition when Biondi-Santi "invented" it in the late 18 hundreds. When the region got its DOC in the late 60'ies, the wineries could be counted on 2 hands. The explosion came in the 90'ies when the region reached international fame.

Montalcino is tucked away in the South of Tuscany and is protected by an extinct volcano. The many elements that make this region unique allows it for pure Sangiovese wines.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is the undisputed king of wines. It's regular version close to 5 yrs, and the Riserva an extra year before released on the market. The second wine is the Rosso di Montalcino DOC, also made from Sangiovese, whereas the Moscadello di Montalcino DOC and the Sant'Antimo DOC are less common.
