San Niccolò - our neighborhood of Florence!

San Niccolò: Where Florence Feels Like Home

Florence is famous for its masterpieces — the Duomo, Michelangelo, Renaissance palaces — but the soul of the city often reveals itself somewhere quieter.

Just across the river, beneath Piazzale Michelangelo, lies San Niccolò.

It’s not a neighborhood you rush through. It’s one you wander.

Here, daily life still unfolds at street level. Artisans lift their shutters in the morning. Locals greet each other by name. Small food shops, wine bars, and studios sit side by side, quietly doing what they’ve always done—serving the people who actually live here.

This is the Florence we love most.

And this is where we meet our guests each morning before setting off on their Grape Tours wine adventures.

In the video below, Matteo walks through San Niccolò—and he isn’t pointing out “attractions.” He’s sharing a way of seeing the city: noticing the people, the details, the rhythm of everyday life. Here, conversations matter just as much as monuments.

At Grape Tours, this philosophy guides everything we do. We’re not interested in rushing from stop to stop or ticking boxes. We want our guests to understand why places feel the way they do—how food, wine, craft, and community are woven together.

San Niccolò is a perfect expression of that connection. It’s a neighborhood shaped by makers, farmers, artists, and shopkeepers—people who keep traditions alive not for show, but because it’s simply their life.

This is also why Florence remains such a powerful base for exploring Tuscany. Within minutes, you can move from world-class art to lived-in neighborhoods, from history books to real conversations, from crowds to calm—from a casual glass of wine to some of Italy’s most important wine regions right at the city’s doorstep.

If you’re curious about Florence beyond the postcard version—the quieter streets, the human stories, the places locals love—start here. Slow down. Walk a little. Let the city reveal itself. That’s when Florence truly opens up.
