Podere Erica
CHIANTI CLASSICO
Nestled in the beautiful hills of Chianti Classico, between the historic villages of San Donato in Poggio and Olena, Podere Erica is a small, enchanting organic estate where nature and winemaking go hand in hand. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, pastures and woodland, the property is a wonderful example of Tuscany's traditional agricultural landscape. Purchased by American couple Jan and Neal Dempsey in 2005, the estate has been lovingly restored and transformed into a thriving organic farm, with a strong commitment to sustainability and preserving the natural beauty of the land.
At the heart of Podere Erica's winemaking philosophy is talented winemaker Marco Giordano, who has been guiding the estate's wine production since 2009. The vineyards, planted primarily with Sangiovese alongside traditional Tuscan varieties such as Canaiolo and Trebbiano, are cultivated organically and following biodynamic principles. Grapes are harvested by hand, fermentations occur spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are bottled without filtration and with minimal sulphites. The result is a collection of authentic, expressive wines that celebrate the character of the local terroir rather than following conventional winemaking formulas.
Each wine is charmingly named after a bird found on the property. The flagship Il Picchio, a beautifully structured Sangiovese aged in French oak, offers depth, elegance and complexity, while La Ghiandaia, a blend of Sangiovese and Canaiolo, is wonderfully fresh and fruit-driven. The lighter, playful The Raven combines red and white grape varieties in a refreshing, easy-drinking style, while the estate also produces a vibrant Sangiovese rosé and a distinctive Trebbiano white. Podere Erica's dedication to quality and sustainability has earned it the prestigious Chiocciola recognition from Slow Wine.
A visit to Podere Erica is an intimate and personal experience, far removed from the more commercial wineries of the region. Guests are welcomed into the peaceful surroundings of the farm, where vineyards, olive trees and woodland coexist with the estate's resident animals. A stroll through the vineyard and cellar offers a fascinating introduction to Marco's natural approach to winemaking, followed by a relaxed tasting overlooking the surrounding Tuscan hills.
More than simply a winery, Podere Erica embodies a genuine love for the land and a thoughtful, sustainable approach to agriculture. With its beautifully crafted natural wines, welcoming atmosphere and deep respect for Chianti's winemaking traditions, it offers an authentic glimpse into a quieter, more personal side of Tuscany.
