Umbria, Abruzzo & Marche

a Grapetrotters Adventure in June

This is a Grapetrotters Adventure that involves 3 central Italian regions, usually overlooked by the regular traveler visiting Italy so this trip is perfect for adventurous wine & food lovers. It's an area full of fantastic grape varieties from deep reds to mineral whites and many a great local dish to be paired with them.

Learn all about them as we go from area to area to taste all the different flavors.

Please note that we run this tour in late June to be able to see the spectacular flowering in Castelluccio di Norcia.

Monday, June 24 - 2024 (day 1)

We meet at our Grape Tours office in central Florence at 8 am and we head towards Umbria stopping first in the beautiful village Spello where you can walk the cobbled streets, see the flower many pots, and window shop for Umbrian ceramics.

We then head to visit two wineries that produce delicious Sagrantino wines, one larger winery, and the other boutique.

We stay in Montefalco village, in the center of Umbria, and have a lovely dinner featuring the specialties of the region.

Tuesday,  June 25 - 2024 (day 2)

We visit a local cheese maker who will show us the ins and outs of his farm. We will taste the raw milk sheep cheeses that are delicious.

We then travel further into Umbria and stop in Spoleto where we will stroll around the magnificent village. You can have a quick bite to eat (if you are hungry after all the cheese) and gelato!

We arrive in Norcia, famous for Prosciutto and black truffles. We will visit the earthquake-struck (2016) village and settle into our countryside residence.

Dinner will feature delicious local foods and wines.

Wednesday, June 26 - 2024 (day 3)

We head up into the Apennines and reach Castelluccio, paradise on earth - a completely unimaginable valley area high up in the mountains where flowers bloom into a patchwork of colors.

Gourmet lunch in a hidden gem recently given its first Michelin star!

In the evening we will be in Le Marche in the area of Piceno in a panoramic winery relais where we will enjoy a light picnic dinner with wines.

Thursday, June 27 - 2024 (day 4)

After breakfast, we head towards Abruzzo. We will eat traditional foods at a local restaurant before heading to a delightful family-owned winery, with a visit to the amazing cellars.

Offida will be on our way back and we will then visit the Cocci Grifoni winery where we will have a lovely dinner and try the Pecorino & Passerina varietals.

Friday, June 28 - 2024 (day 5)

We drive along the Adriatic seaside to discover a region in Le Marche famous for red wines, Conero. It's a beautiful coastal region, right by the industrious port of Ancona. We'll tour the area with a lovely winery visit followed by lunch on the beach.

In the afternoon we head towards Morro d'Alba, a small town known for the particular Lacrima grape.

We will stay at an olive oil farm inn, overlooking the hills.

We then visit a winery and after we'll grab a pizza in the village.

Saturday, June 29 - 2024 (day 6)

We depart after breakfast and further inland we visit a small wine producer who is rocking the world of Verdicchio.

On our drive back, we have our last amazing meal.

We will be back in Florence in the afternoon (around 5 pm) from where you can continue your travels.
