Tuscany in a Bottle

2008: Small mixed group tour (max 8 p) every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

3. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Tuscan Wine Tours proposes this tour as a private tour.
The historical hilltop towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano are often confused because their names sound so similar. However, the first means "the mount of the oak" the latter means "the mount of politics" and nowadays both are wonderful wine making regions of Tuscany.

Where Montalcino has its Brunello, Montepulciano is famed for the red wine called Vino Nobile or "noble wine". Montepulciano is also in the South of Tuscany and is favoured by the climatic conditions that proves to make great red wines. Funnily enough, it also produces the greatest Vin Santo dessert wines (that are aged up to 10 years).
Departure will be around 9 am, maybe a little earlier if you are staying in Florence as it is a longer ride. We shall visit a quaint winery that produces the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, if the weather permits, we shall taste wines in the garden overlooking the view that you see on this background. We will snack some cold cuts and bread with olive oil. There will be a possibility of tasting an amazing Vin Santo (small quantity produced, so this is guaranteed until it terminates).

You will notice that this itinerary doesn't include an actual lunch. That's because we'll be snacking at the winery and then in the afternoon we will be going to a pecorino cheese farm South of Siena where there will be a serious cheese snack.

On the way, there will be the opportunity of paying a quick visit to the town of Montepulciano.

Please note that you shouldn't expect to be doing much other shopping on this tour, as the visit to the town will be in the "siesta" time when shops are closed (from 1pm to 4 pm).

Return between approx. 5/6 p.m.
